Supreme Court Rules on ADC Leadership Crisis; Atiku Urges Caution

The Supreme Court has delivered pivotal judgments on political party leadership disputes, significantly altering the landscape for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other stakeholders.

In a landmark ruling, the apex court vacated the status quo ante bellum order previously granted in the ADC leadership crisis, returning the substantive suit to the trial court for a fresh hearing. The decision effectively resets the legal battle over the party’s national leadership.

Concurrently, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised the faction led by Senator David Mark as the legitimate ADC leadership. Former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has also been restored to the party’s portal following the judicial developments.

Reacting to the rulings, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a prominent opposition figure, cautioned supporters against premature celebration.

“The real battle lies ahead,” Atiku stated, emphasizing that legal victories are only one step in the broader political struggle. “We must remain focused, organised, and ready for the tasks ahead.”

Political analysts note that the Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the judiciary’s critical role in resolving intra-party conflicts while highlighting the complexities of factional recognition in Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.

As parties regroup, attention now shifts to how these rulings will influence candidate nominations, coalition building, and electoral strategy ahead of future polls.
