Federal Government Declares May 1 Public Holiday for Workers’ Day

The Federal Government has officially declared today, Thursday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday in honour of International Workers’ Day.

In a statement signed by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the government commended Nigerian workers for their resilience and contributions to national development.

Tunji-Ojo urged citizens to use the day to reflect on the value of labour while recommitting to productivity and unity.

“As we celebrate the dignity of labour, I encourage all workers to remain patriotic, focused, and aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” the Minister stated. “Our collective progress depends on dedication, integrity, and a shared vision for a stronger Nigeria.”

The holiday applies to all federal government offices, agencies, and institutions nationwide. State governments and private sector organisations are encouraged to observe the day in recognition of workers’ rights and contributions.

International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, is commemorated globally to honour labour achievements, advocate for fair working conditions, and promote social justice.

In Nigeria, the day often features speeches, community events, and calls for continued dialogue between labour unions, employers, and government.

As celebrations unfold, the Federal Government has advised citizens to observe the holiday peacefully and responsibly.
