Tinubu vs Jonathan: Early 2027 Presidential Chess Moves

As Nigeria’s political temperature rises, President Bola Tinubu’s re-election machinery is already in top gear, while former President Goodluck Jonathan maintains a cautious, consultative approach.

On Thursday, Vice President Kashim Shettima formally submitted Tinubu’s expression of interest and nomination forms to the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, signaling the ruling party’s endorsement of the president as its sole candidate for a second term.

The move underscores Tinubu’s firm grip on the APC structure and his determination to seek re-election.

In sharp contrast, Jonathan on the same day responded to passionate appeals from youths and a coalition urging him to contest, saying: “I have heard you loud and clear.”

He, however, declined to commit, stressing that “the presidential race is not a computer game” and that he would consult widely before deciding.

Key Differences

Tinubu enjoys the full weight of incumbency and a unified ruling party, while Jonathan—constitutionally eligible after serving only one term—is weighing options amid pressure from some PDP and independent stakeholders.

Tinubu’s camp has already dismissed Jonathan’s potential entry as unserious, while analysts say a Jonathan bid could fragment opposition votes or reshape alliances, especially in the South-South.
