Senegal’s Diomaye Faye Elected New ECOWAS Chairman

Senegal’s President, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio.

Faye’s election was announced at the conclusion of the ECOWAS summit attended by leaders from member states, marking a significant leadership transition at a time when the regional bloc faces some of its most pressing challenges in recent years.

The Senegalese leader assumes the chairmanship amid growing security threats across West Africa, including terrorism, insurgency, and political instability in several member states. ECOWAS is also grappling with democratic setbacks and the continued withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, three Sahel nations that have distanced themselves from the bloc following military takeovers.

In his acceptance remarks, Faye pledged to work closely with fellow West African leaders to strengthen regional unity, restore confidence in democratic institutions, and address the security and economic challenges confronting the sub-region.

The new chairman is expected to play a central role in ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at re-engaging the three withdrawing countries and maintaining stability within the ECOWAS community.

President Faye, who was elected Senegal’s president earlier this year, has emerged as one of the region’s youngest and most closely watched leaders. His tenure as ECOWAS chairman will be closely monitored as the bloc seeks to navigate a complex political and security landscape.

Outgoing chairman Julius Maada Bio was commended by member states for his leadership during a period marked by regional tensions and efforts to uphold constitutional order across West Africa.
