Mary Habila was Found Dead After Overnight Stay at Umahi’s Abuja Residence

A woman identified as Mary Habila was allegedly found dead inside a locked room at a residence belonging to Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, in Abuja, sparking a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.

According to Daily Trust, Habila had allegedly spent the night at the minister’s residence before she was discovered lifeless the following morning. A colleague was quoted as saying that repeated attempts to reach her failed until the room she occupied was opened, revealing her unresponsive body.

According to The Punch Newspaper, the incident has generated public concern, with conflicting accounts emerging over what may have led to her death.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command confirmed that an investigation has commenced to determine the cause and circumstances of the incident. Police spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh said officers responded after receiving a distress report and recovered the body for further examination.

Authorities said the deceased’s remains have been deposited at a hospital mortuary, where an autopsy is expected to be conducted to establish the exact cause of death. Investigators are also expected to interview relevant witnesses and review available evidence as part of the ongoing probe.

Reacting to reports linking the incident to the Minister of Works, officials close to David Umahi said the minister was neither present at the residence nor connected to the events that allegedly led to Habila’s death. They urged the public to avoid speculation and allow law enforcement agencies to conclude their investigation.

The case has triggered renewed calls for a thorough and transparent investigation to establish the facts surrounding Habila’s death and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
