Ondo Gubernatorial Election: PDP’s Ajayi Slams Tribunal Ruling, Vows to Appeal

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the November 16, 2024 Ondo State election, Agboola Ajayi , has rejected the ruling of the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and announced plans to appeal the decision.
The tribunal, led by Justice Benson Ogubu, dismissed all petitions challenging the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing them as “worthless and unmeritorious.”
The petitions were filed by multiple political parties including the Action Alliance (AA), Allied People’s Movement (APM), Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), and the PDP.
Speaking shortly after the verdict was delivered on June 4, 2025, Ajayi expressed deep dissatisfaction with the tribunal’s findings. He accused the panel of failing to properly analyze key evidence presented during the hearing.
“We believe there were glaring inconsistencies in how the tribunal handled critical evidence and exhibits,” Ajayi said. “While we respect the judiciary, we strongly disagree with the outcome and will be appealing this decision.”
Ajayi emphasized that the PDP remains committed to upholding democratic values and the rule of law, despite what he described as growing concerns about judicial integrity in politically sensitive cases.
“Electoral laws are not symbolic—they must be obeyed. Our democracy deserves better,” he added.
In a pointed critique, Ajayi also raised eyebrows over what he called the premature celebration by APC representatives inside the courtroom on the day of the ruling.
“It was troubling to see APC members arrive in celebratory moods, clearly expecting the outcome before it was even read. While disturbing, this is not discouraging. We remain undeterred in our pursuit of justice,” he said.
Ajayi urged PDP supporters across Ondo State and Nigeria at large to remain hopeful and steadfast. He reiterated that the party’s decision to appeal reflects its unwavering commitment to the democratic process and the sanctity of Nigeria’s electoral system.
This development comes just days ahead of Democracy Day , which Nigeria is set to celebrate on June 12 , marking yet another test for the country’s evolving democratic institutions.
