The Kogi State Police Command has urged Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial District of Kogi State, citing security concerns and a recent ban on political gatherings.
The State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, conveyed this directive on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya. According to the statement, the planned rally directly violates the state government’s order issued on Monday, prohibiting political gatherings due to security threats.
The statement read: “Following intelligence reports indicating potential security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of rallies and processions by the state government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Command, calls on the organizers of the planned rally in Okene to cancel the event in the interest of peace and security.”
The police warned that intelligence suggests certain hoodlums may attempt to hijack the gathering to incite violence, posing a threat to the stability of the state. “The Command cannot afford to compromise the existing peace in Kogi State,” the statement added
In light of these concerns, the police have strongly advised the rally organizers to call off the event to prevent any potential breakdown of law and order. The statement further cautioned that anyone found disrupting public peace would face the full force of the law.
Despite the government’s ban on political gatherings, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has insisted on proceeding with her visit, maintaining that her trip is solely to celebrate Eid-al-Fitr with her constituents.
Reacting to the news, Nigerians took to their social media platform called X to express their view on the development. Austino reacted “But Wike can go to Bayelsa for his rally? The people that championed NADEKO has turned Nigeria into military dictatorship. One day bush meat go pursue the hunter”.
Ezenwa also reacted thus “What kind of people do we have in Nigeria? That she should xcancel her home coming because of what? Are you now the one to tell her when to go home and when not to?
Ayomitide @OracleAyo also responded “Lol. This proclamation is rooted in the constitution of the Federal Republic? Or is police no longer upholding the constitution? Ok o”
