NDC Zones 2027 Presidential Ticket to the South

In a significant development that has set tongues wagging across Nigeria’s political landscape, the newly active Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria during its maiden national convention held in Abuja on Saturday.

The decision, which many see as clearing the path for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, was adopted after a motion moved by Hon.

Afam Victor Ogene, member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

Delegates unanimously agreed that the presidential ticket will be for a single four-year term in the South (covering the Southeast and South-South), with the slot automatically rotating to the North in 2031. The vice presidential ticket was zoned to the North.

According to Punch Newspaper, the party also confirmed the zoning via its official X handle with the simple but powerful declaration: “NDC Presidential ticket is zoned to the South!!”

The convention, held at the Los Angeles Event Centre, drew heavyweights including Peter Obi, former Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, and NDC National Leader, former Bayelsa Governor Seriake Dickson.

Party leaders described the zoning as a deliberate step towards justice, equity, and national cohesion. Obi and Kwankwaso, who recently joined the NDC, used the platform to reaffirm their commitment to building a stronger opposition and rescuing Nigeria from what they called poor governance and insecurity.

Whether this new platform can translate momentum into electoral success remains to be seen, but the convention has clearly injected fresh energy into the already heated 2027 conversations.
