South-West PDP Slams the Door on Opposition Coalition
In a major political twist that’s already setting tongues wagging across the country, the South-West Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has officially declared that it is not joining the newly formed opposition coalition, dashing hopes that Nigeria’s 2027 elections would see a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement came after a high-powered meeting held at the PDP Zonal Secretariat in Ibadan, Oyo State — a clear signal that the party means business as the next general elections inch closer.
“We Are Not Part of the Coalition”
Reading the official communique, Zonal Publicity Secretary Sanya Atofarati made it crystal clear:
“The caucus reaffirms that the PDP in South-West is intact and urges all members to remain united, steadfast, and continue to stand behind our leaders in the zone.”
This comes just days after heavyweights like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Senate President David Mark, ex-Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai, and others reportedly endorsed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as their preferred platform for 2027. But the South-West PDP wants everyone to know — they are not on board.
Why Is This Big News?
Because the South-West is arguably the strongest regional stronghold the PDP still holds, with governors like Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Ademola Adeleke (Osun) leading the charge, the region has remained loyal to the PDP even as other zones have seen internal rifts or flirted with coalitions.
And now, instead of jumping ship, the zone says it’s doubling down.
Far from being shaken by the coalition drama, the South-West PDP is laser-focused on winning upcoming elections:
- The Ogun State bye-elections
- The Lagos Local Government Council elections
They’re also rallying behind the party’s national leadership, expressing full support for the upcoming National Convention, which they say will reposition the party for victory in 2027.
Osun Allocation Controversy
In a fiery statement, the caucus slammed the Federal Government for withholding Osun State’s Local Government Allocation, calling it unconstitutional and an attack on the rights of Osun residents.
They also took a hard stance on the country’s worsening insecurity and economic hardship, blaming the APC administration for dragging Nigeria into crisis.
“2027 Will Be Between Nigerians and APC”
Echoing comments from Governor Makinde, the caucus said the 2027 election won’t be a contest between parties, but rather between the Nigerian people and the APC.
“The people of Nigeria are ready for change, and under the banner of the PDP, we will deliver it.”
In closing, the PDP urged Nigerians not to lose hope. “Stay strong. Stay united. Rally behind the PDP, because together, we will rescue this nation from misrule.”
