Akwa-Ibom Commissioner Resigns Amid Governor Eno’s APC Defection
In a significant development within Akwa-Ibom State’s political landscape, Akwa-Ibom Commissioner Ini Ememobong, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port, has tendered his resignation from Governor Umo Eno’s cabinet. This move follows Governor Eno’s recent directive that appointees unwilling to join him in his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) should step down.
A Letter of Appreciation and Conviction
In a heartfelt resignation letter addressed to Governor Eno, Ememobong expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in two pivotal ministries under the administration, Information and Special Duties, as well as the Ibom Deep Sea Port. He described the experience as “enlightening” and acknowledged the privilege of contributing to the state’s progress.
“You have directed that any appointee unwilling to accompany you on this political journey to the APC should resign, ”Ememobong wrote.“ Ipso facto, based on my conviction, I will be unable to join the All Progressives Congress. I hereby most respectfully tender my resignation as Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties and Ibom Deep Sea Port and a member of the State Executive Council.”
The outgoing commissioner concluded by thanking Governor Eno for the trust placed in him, adding, “May I most heartily again thank you for the opportunity to serve your administration and our state.”
Ememobong Speaks Out on His Decision
In a separate statement posted on his official Facebook page, Ememobong elaborated on the motivations behind his resignation. While acknowledging the governor’s personal decision to switch parties, he explained that his principles prevented him from following suit.
“Behold, another bend,” Ememobong began. “Today, I have tendered my resignation to the Governor in compliance with his directive that appointees unwilling to join him in the APC should step aside.”
He continued, “While I cannot question or fault the Governor’s decision, I am unable to join in that sojourn. My decision is borne out of my belief in politics with principles and my long-standing opposition to that political platform, which is daily validated by numerous Nigerians across many sectors.”
Despite his resignation, Ememobong affirmed that his relationship with Governor Eno remains intact. “This decision does not affect my relationship with the Governor, who calls me his brother and reposed great confidence in me by saddling me with two important ministries,” he stated. “I have and will continue to have tremendous respect for HE Governor Umo Eno, even outside EXCO.”
Looking Back and Moving Forward
Reflecting on his tenure, Ememobong expressed pride in his contributions to public service. “About my history in political and public service, I look back with great satisfaction at the work I have done and leave the ultimate judgment to history and posterity. Given another opportunity, I will do more.”
He also conveyed gratitude to former Governor Udom Emmanuel, who initially appointed him to the Executive Council during his administration. “Let me convey the heartfelt appreciation of my family to His Excellency, Pastor Umo Eno, for appointing me to his cabinet. Our very special appreciation goes to Mr. Udom Emmanuel for his enduring love and belief in me.”
Acknowledging that his decision may disappoint some, Ememobong sought understanding, saying, “I understand this decision may not please everyone, and to those who are disappointed, I humbly seek your understanding.”
Concluding on a reflective note, he added, “As usual, I do not know the future, but I know HE who holds the future, and I trust that at the end, all things work together for good, to those who love the Lord and are called unto HIS purpose.”
Governor Eno’s Formal Defection to APC
The resignation comes in the wake of Governor Umo Eno’s formal defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC. The announcement was made during a ceremony held at the Government House in Uyo on Friday, June 6. Prominent APC leaders from across Nigeria attended the event, underscoring its significance.
Among those present were notable figures such as Hope Uzodimma, Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State; Monday Okpebholo of Edo State; Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State; Bassey Otu of Cross River State; Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State; Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State; and Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State.
During the ceremony, Governor Eno declared his decision to “progressively move to the APC,” stating that he had already submitted his resignation letter from the PDP to the ward chairperson. Elected under the PDP in 2023, Eno’s defection marks a pivotal moment in Akwa-Ibom’s political trajectory.
